Maripod
Maripod is a 2D platformer with light puzzle-solving and horror elements. It was created by a team of four for the class IM 289. I was the team’s sole programmer, with some design contributions as well. The game centers around a grub traveling through oceanic environments and evading terrifying monsters to reach its destination.
I wrote the majority of the code behind the game, including versatile systems for the game’s cutscenes, the enemy behavior, and a Cinemachine-based camera system. The creation of those scripts was a valuable learning process, and it gave me ideas for how to iterate upon what I’d written in future projects. My other contributions to the game included minor level design and animation implementation, co-writing of the game’s dialogue, particle effects, and creating the transition scenes between levels. This project was also my introduction to GitHub.
At the student-run IM 289 Awards, Maripod was the winner for Best Art Direction. It was the runner-up for Game of the Semester, Most Original Idea, and Best Sound Design. Maripod’s Grub character was the runner-up for Best Character.
